Scanning Settings Tab Reference

Scanning Settings Tab

When you open the ScrewDrivers Scanning Client app, the Scanning Settings tab is the first thing you'll see. This is where you configure how your remote scanning sessions behave, from basic on/off controls to advanced duplex scanning and RDP settings.

These settings can significantly affect your scanning experience. If you're not sure about a particular option, contact your ScrewDrivers Administrator for guidance - they can help you choose the right settings for your environment.

Basic Scanning Control

Scanning: This is your master on/off switch for scanning functionality. It's turned on by default, but if you turn it off, all users on the client are prevented from scanning. This can be useful if you need to temporarily disable scanning for maintenance or troubleshooting.

General Settings

Alert user of virtual channel errors: This option is turned on by default, and it's a good idea to leave it that way. When enabled, you'll see a notification whenever there's a communication error between your ScrewDrivers remote machine and your client. These alerts help you catch problems early before they disrupt your scanning work.

Lock scanner during entire session: Normally, scanner drivers lock just before a scan starts and unlock right after it completes. But some network scanner drivers work better when they stay locked for your entire session. If you're using a network scanner and experiencing issues, try enabling this option.

Use TWAIN data source manager (DSM): Don't enable this unless Tricerat support specifically tells you to. It's a specialized setting for troubleshooting particular scanner compatibility issues.

RDP Encryption and Compression

These settings give you control over how your scanning data is encrypted and compressed as it travels between the remote machine and your client. You can choose only one option in each category.

Encryption Options:

  • Disable encryption: Forces RDP encryption to be turned off for your scanning data. Use this only in secure, isolated networks where encryption isn't needed.
  • Use current RDP settings (default): This follows whatever encryption settings your ScrewDrivers Administrator has configured. It's the recommended option for most users.
  • Use data encryption: Forces RDP encryption to be turned on, regardless of other settings. Choose this if you're working with sensitive documents in less secure network environments.

Compression Options:

  • Disable compression: Turns off RDP compression for your scanning data. This might be useful on very fast networks where compression overhead isn't worth the bandwidth savings.
  • Use current RDP settings (default): Uses whatever compression settings your administrator has specified. This balances performance and bandwidth efficiently for most scenarios.
  • Use data compression: Forces compression to be enabled, which can really help if you're scanning over slower network connections.

Duplex Scanning

Detect and skip blank second page: This smart feature is turned on by default. When you're doing duplex (two-sided) scanning, it uses your threshold setting to detect when the back of a page is blank. Those blank pages don't get sent to the remote machine, saving bandwidth and storage. It's particularly useful when scanning single-sided documents in duplex mode.

Threshold: This slider lets you fine-tune what counts as a "blank" page by setting the percentage of white or black pixels needed. If you're getting false positives (blank pages being scanned) or false negatives (pages with light content being skipped), adjust this threshold to find the sweet spot for your documents.

Margins

Margin settings let you tell the scanner which parts of the page to evaluate during duplex blank detection.

You've got two ways to set margins:

  • Choose from the preset options: Narrow, Normal, or Wide. These cover most common scenarios.
  • Create a custom margin by selecting "Other" and entering your specific values. Any data that falls outside your specified margins won't be evaluated when determining if a page is blank.
