What Changed in ScrewDrivers v7

If you're coming to ScrewDrivers v7 from v6 or earlier, the product looks different before you've installed a single component: names changed, installers were consolidated, and a few platform requirements tightened. This page explains what changed and why, and maps every old name to its v7 equivalent.

A refocused product line

Printing is Tricerat's core business, and v7 reflects that focus. The product offerings were simplified into three editions:

ScrewDrivers Administration
ScrewDrivers Print Server

New component names

Starting with v7, Tricerat consolidated all component naming under the ScrewDrivers brand. If you managed Simplify Printing or Simplify Suite, use these tables to translate.

Consolidated installers

v7 reduces the installer count considerably. If a v6 installer isn't listed below, the functionality associated with it is no longer supported in v7.

Deployment changes to plan for

Platform support. v7 drops all 32-bit operating system support, desktop OSes prior to Windows 10, and server OSes prior to Windows Server 2012 R2 — and the 7.9 series goes one further: Windows Server 2012 R2 itself is supported only through ScrewDrivers 7.8.x. Endpoints that must stay on a 32-bit OS can continue using the v6 client, which connects to v7 servers.

.NET 4.8 prerequisite. .NET Framework 4.8 must be installed before running any v7 installer. Because .NET 4.8 isn't a Windows Feature, it can't be embedded in the installers as a prerequisite. Without it, nodelocked license activation fails and the UIs won't run. Each v7 product folder includes the appropriate .NET 4.8 installer.

A separate database installer. All high-permission database actions (create, initialize, update) for Pro and Enterprise moved into their own installer, ScrewDriversDatabase, which you run once per environment. The main ScrewDriversProOrEnterprise installer now needs only basic read and write access to the Tricerat database — a meaningful reduction in the permissions your day-to-day installs require.

Built-in Administration authorization. ScrewDrivers Administration now has its own permission system, initialized when you run the ScrewDrivers Database installer. Initially, Domain Admins, the Local Admins of the machine where the installer ran, and the user who ran it hold Super Admin permissions; grant others access from the Permissions tab in ScrewDrivers Administration. These permissions are specific to ScrewDrivers Administration — they're unrelated to a user's domain account permissions.
