License Modes

ScrewDrivers v6 and Simplify Suite v6 support four different licensing modes to fit various deployment scenarios and purchasing preferences. Version 6 introduced changes from earlier versions, with Concurrent User licensing now being the recommended approach for most new deployments.

When you start a trial, you'll typically receive a concurrent user license. The exceptions are ScrewDrivers and Simplify Scanning, which use nodelocked licenses that can be applied during installation. After your trial, Tricerat's best practice is to set up a license server with concurrent user licensing based on your actual user count.

License Modes

Concurrent User

A concurrent user license is a per-user license that counts active users on the system at any given time. If your peak user count exceeds your license provision, you'll see a license violation. This mode works well for environments where users log on and off throughout the day--think shift workers or shared workstations.

Concurrent User licensing requires a license server and is now the preferred license type for v6. Tricerat offers several license types to adapt to different environment needs and purchasing preferences.

Named User

Named user licenses are assigned to specific individual users and can't be shared between people. You can modify the named user list from the license console, which gives administrators full control over licensing in environments where only certain individuals need access to Tricerat products.

Named user licensing requires a license server. You'll need to add usernames to the Tricerat License Console to grant access.

Node Locked

A node locked license is applied directly to a terminal server installation. Once you've activated it, the license can't be moved to another server without assistance from Tricerat Support. This approach works well when all your users connect to terminal servers with high user density--everyone on that server is automatically licensed without needing additional licenses.

Node locked licensing doesn't require a license server since the license is applied directly to the software installation. It's the default license type for trials and is equivalent to the per-server licenses used in v4 and v5. Most customers upgrading to v6 will continue using this license type.

One activation code can activate multiple servers. For example, if you purchase 5 node locked servers, you'll receive a single activation code that works on all 5 servers. After you've activated all 5, the key won't work on additional servers.

Concurrent Server

Concurrent server licenses cover terminal servers that can be dynamically reallocated. A license server maintains the concurrent server license pool and tracks which servers are currently activated. This mode is particularly useful for dynamically provisioned servers like those in PVS or MCS environments, and for large deployments where you'd rather not manage individual licenses on each node.

License Server

Most license modes (Concurrent User, Named User, and Concurrent Server) require a license server to distribute licenses to your servers and desktops. You can install the license server on any Windows computer--it just needs to be accessible by any machine running Tricerat software (except ScrewDrivers Client).

A license server can only host one license per feature, which means you can run both Simplify Suite and ScrewDrivers licenses from the same server, but you can't host multiple Simplify Suite licenses on one server. When you add licenses, Tricerat updates the activation code to reflect your current license count and maintenance expiration.

For multi-tenant environments where you need to track usage rights separately for each tenant, you'll want to set up a dedicated license server for each tenant.
