ScrewDrivers with Azure Virtual Desktop

Coming Soon

This tutorial is currently under development. We're creating a comprehensive guide for deploying ScrewDrivers in Azure Virtual Desktop environments.

What You'll Learn

This tutorial walks you through deploying ScrewDrivers in Azure Virtual Desktop. You'll learn to:

  • Architect ScrewDrivers for AVD environments
  • Deploy Print Server in Azure or hybrid scenarios
  • Configure AVD session hosts with ScrewDrivers
  • Enable printing to Azure-based printers
  • Set up hybrid printing (cloud and on-premises)
  • Configure Universal Print integration (optional)
  • Optimize for cloud performance and costs
  • Troubleshoot AVD-specific printing issues

What You'll Need

Before starting this tutorial:

  • Azure Virtual Desktop environment configured and running
  • Azure subscription with appropriate permissions
  • Windows Server VM in Azure (for Print Server) or on-premises connectivity
  • Test AVD session host pools
  • Test users with AVD access
  • Administrator access to Azure and AVD components
  • About 2-3 hours to complete the tutorial

Tutorial Overview

Azure Virtual Desktop introduces unique considerations for print management. This tutorial guides you through architectural decisions and deployment steps for cloud or hybrid scenarios.

What We'll Build Together

You'll create a complete AVD printing solution:

  1. Architecture Planning - Choose cloud, hybrid, or on-premises Print Server placement
  2. Network Configuration - Set up connectivity between AVD and Print Server
  3. Print Server Deployment - Deploy in Azure or connect to on-premises
  4. Session Host Configuration - Install ScrewDrivers on AVD session hosts
  5. Cloud Printer Setup - Configure printers in Azure
  6. Hybrid Scenarios - Enable printing to both cloud and on-premises printers
  7. Universal Print Integration (Optional) - Connect to Microsoft Universal Print
  8. Performance Optimization - Minimize cloud costs and optimize performance

By the end, your AVD users will have seamless printing regardless of printer location.

Why ScrewDrivers for Azure Virtual Desktop?

AVD printing challenges include:

  • Printer driver management in cloud-based session hosts
  • Connectivity to on-premises printers from cloud sessions
  • Performance and latency over internet connections
  • Cost management for cloud resources

ScrewDrivers solves these:

  • Driver-free printing eliminates cloud driver management
  • Hybrid architecture supports both cloud and on-premises printers
  • Optimized print job routing reduces bandwidth and costs
  • Centralized management simplifies AVD printer administration

Prerequisites

You should understand:

  • Azure Virtual Desktop fundamentals
  • Azure networking (VNets, NSGs, ExpressRoute/VPN)
  • AVD session host pools and host groups
  • Windows Server administration
  • Cloud vs. hybrid architecture considerations

Architecture Options

We'll explore different deployment models:

Option 1: Cloud-Only

  • Print Server in Azure VM
  • Printers in Azure or Universal Print
  • Best for cloud-first organizations

Option 2: Hybrid

  • Print Server on-premises or in Azure
  • Mix of cloud and on-premises printers
  • Best for organizations with existing print infrastructure

Option 3: Distributed

  • Multiple Print Servers (cloud and on-premises)
  • Location-based routing
  • Best for large, geographically distributed organizations

This tutorial covers all three options.
